Disney Stories Matter Initiative Flags Classic Toons for Racist Imagery

Disney Stories Matter Initiative Flags Classic Toons for Racist Imagery

In an article from animationmagazine.net the author discusses Disney's action against some of their own racist films from the past. Many old animations showcase racist imagery, such as the crows from Dumbo, or the cats from Aristocats, and The Jungle Book. Disney will flag these movies that showcase racism to show that they are against it and to educate people. "Disney+ will be adding warnings to several classic films from the Walt Disney Animation and live-action catalog, shining a light on some of the problematic characters and racist depictions that have not aged well in the animation vault". I love that Disney is not trying to hide their past but instead trying to use it to educate people. This is what the advisor reads when you select one of the movies. “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together."
